Rhythm

OverView:
When a transformative percussion teacher is abruptly forced
into retirement and faces a profound spiritual crisis, he must
reevaluate his legacy to continue teaching.
Floyd Kennedy spent decades teaching students life skills
through his drumming. From paint buckets and boards, Floyd
transformed the drumline at historically underresourced
Natomas High School into a nationally recognized program,
producing students who went on to perform at the
highest level. But when he is abruptly terminated by his
lifelong church and retires from his 30-year high school
teaching career, these callings that anchored him vanish.
Rhythm follows Floyd as he reflects on his legacy, and travels to new places in an attempt to continue teaching post-
retirement.
Rhythm also features Isaiah, a former student and parent.
Isaiah grew up without a father, struggled in school, and had
anger issues. 20 years after Floyd’s mentorship, Isaiah is
now a professional drummer and an outstanding human
being with kids of his own.
Through an observational look at Floyd’s present classroom
and stylized reflections with former students from decades
past, Rhythm is a warm, musical character study that
examines retirement, mentorship, and the impact of
consistent adult support.
